TOP FACULTY, STAFF, ADMINISTRATOR, ADVISOR HONORED AT ABAC

TIFTON--The top faculty member, staff member, administrator, and academic advisor for the 2005-06 academic year were recognized during Wednesday’s Honors Day ceremony in Gressette Gym at Abraham Baldwin College. 

Dr. Herbert Shippey, a professor in the Division of Humanities, received the W. Bruce and Rosalyn Ray Donaldson Award for Teaching Excellence. Janice Payne, an administrative assistant in the Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources, received the Roy R. Jackson, Sr., Award for Staff Excellence. Bertha Daniel, Director of the Office of College Services & Human Resources, received the E. Lanier Carson Leadership Award for College Administrators. Dr. Luke Vassiliou, assistant professor in the Division of Humanities, received the Excellence in Advising Award.

Shippey has been a part of the ABAC faculty since 1992. He has a Bachelor’s degree in English form Georgia Southern University; a Master’s in English from Emory University, and a Doctorate in English from the University of South Carolina. He has been an active member of the Division of Humanities, advising the college’s literary magazine, Pegasus.

Payne has served as the administrative assistant in the Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources since 1978. She received her Associate degree in Secretarial Science from ABAC in 1977. Her duties include maintaining the division budget and student payroll. In 1998 and 2006, she received the Impact Award from the Student Government Association at ABAC. She is a member of the Baldwin Woman’s Club.

Daniel has served the college since 1991, first as a faculty member in the Division of Social Sciences and then as Interim Director of the Office of College Services and Human Resources.   She was selected for that position on a permanent basis in July 2001. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Valdosta State University and a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Troy State University. She has been the Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity officer for the college since 1994.

Vassiliou joined the Division of Humanities faculty in 2002. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and English as a Second Language Teaching from the University of Athens in Greece, a Master’s degree in Rhetoric and Literature from Illinois State University, and his Doctorate from Louisiana State University. He is Director of the Honors Program and advisor to the Honors Club at the college.
