PEDRO PEREZ

ABAC STUDENT AWARDED HISPANIC COLLEGE FUND

TIFTON – Pedro Perez, an Abraham Baldwin College student majoring in engineering, was recently awarded the Hispanic College Fund scholarship in the amount of $2,500 by the Ford Motor Company, the Fund’s Company of the Year.

Perez applied online in February 2005 and was notified by e-mail on July 15 that he was one of the 500 chosen from 2,600 applicants.

“I had to have a 3.0 GPA, be a full-time student, and be a legal resident of the United States in order to qualify for the fund,” Perez said. Most of the scholarships awarded are geared to math, science, and engineering.

Perez, originally from Moultrie, was invited by Ford to participate in the 12th Annual Awards Gala and Leadership Development Program in Washington, D.C. from Oct. 23 – 27.

“It was excellent,” Perez said. “I met the Treasurer of the United States, the CEO of Ford, and other top executives. The gala raised half a million dollars for the Hispanic College Fund.”

Perez is an active member of campus life at ABAC. He serves as a representative for the college through the ABAC Ambassadors. He also is a member of the Honors Club, Cultural Latino, and tutors students through the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP).

Upon graduating from ABAC, Perez plans on attending Georgia Tech in the fall of 2006, majoring in mechanical engineering before attaining his graduate degree in business administration.
