ABAC’S AGRICULTURE PROGRAM A PLUS FOR BRANNEN

TIFTONMegan Brannen, a sophomore animal sciences major at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, grew up around animals on her family’s farm near Statesboro, so it was only a natural choice when she decided to focus on a field involving animals.

“I lived on a farm with my dad raising chickens that are sent to Claxton Poultry,” Brannen said. “We also raised hogs and cows. It’s just something I have always been around and loved doing.”

She chose ABAC because she was looking for a college that had a good agriculture program plus she wanted to attend a smaller school. “I wanted to get my feet planted right before heading off to a bigger school,” Brannen said. “And I loved the campus and the people when I visited.

“My first real impression of ABAC was when I moved into the apartments on campus. My mom and I had two cars full of things and every time we got to the door, there was always someone holding it open for us. Both the faculty and students are so friendly. That said something about how I would enjoy being at ABAC.”

She has been an active member of campus life since arriving at the college in fall 2004. Brannen currently serves as president of the ABAC Ambassadors. She has been a member of the group since her first semester at the college.  She is also a member of the Baptist Student Union and Phi Theta Kappa.

She has participated in the ABAC Beauty Revue for the past two years, winning the essay part of the competition and placing second runner-up overall. Her other hobbies include playing the violin and clogging.

After graduation from ABAC, she hopes to attend the University of Georgia, where she will focus her studies in the field of either animal or human nutrition and obtain a degree in dietetics.

“I have always been interested in nutrition but I’m undecided if I want to stay with animals or move onto the human side,” Brannen said.

After college she hopes to start a family and have a career already underway. “I want to return to Bulloch County to be around my family and my church. I always enjoy their company,” Brannen said.
