LOWNDES COUNTY STUDENT
TAKES SCIENCE FAIR TITLE
TIFTON—Courtney Walker from Lowndes Middle School was the first place winner in the junior division (grades 6 - 8)
of the recent Abraham Baldwin College Regional Science and Engineering Fair. The
title of her project was “Which Foods
Do Ants Like/Dislike” in the category of Zoology.
Cyndi
Harrell, Walker’s
teacher, received an award plaque. Walker also won the Suber
Award for best junior division project in the field of entomology.
Megan
Green from Ben Hill
Middle School won
second place in the junior division for her project “Will a Gerbil Learn to Follow a Path of a Particular Color to
Find a Reward in a Maze?”
The American Chemical Society Award of a $100
savings bond for the best
Chemistry project went to Brooke Sims from Lowndes Middle School. The title of her
project was “Which Type of Water Will Rust Iron the Fastest?” Harrell, who is also her teacher, received
a year’s subscription to the Journal of Chemical Education.
A
total of 100 students from three counties (Lowndes, Colquitt, and Ben Hill)
participated in the fair. ABAC Science and Mathematics Division Chair Ray Barber coordinated the event.
Ten students qualified for the Georgia
Science and Engineering Fair (State Competition) in Athens on April 6-9. Qualifiers by county
included Sims and Walker of Lowndes; James
D. McKie, Haley L. Gilleland, Paul R. Johnson, and Green of Ben Hill; and Seth
J. Norman, Ashley M. Mead, Christina M. Craft, and William K. Pierce of
Colquitt.
Students
by county who will serve as alternates include Kimberly K. Cawley of Ben Hill and
Angela J. Moxley and Hunter D. Stone of Colquitt.
