DIVISION OF NURSING RECEIVES $158,000 GRANT

TIFTON—The Division of Nursing at Abraham Baldwin College is the recipient of an Intellectual Capital Partnership Program (ICAPP) grant totaling $158,000.

This is the fourth time ABAC has received this state grant. It is a continuation of the one the Nursing Division received for the 2004-2005 year.

“ABAC was the first school to have graduates under this grant program,” said Wanda Golden, Chair of the Division of Nursing and Health Services.

The grant was originally established due to the shortage of healthcare workers and to promote new and innovative programs in the medical field.  ABAC has used this grant to help support the nursing program’s one day a week classes for those who already have some experience in the medical field.

This program allows licensed practical nurses, paramedics, surgical technicians, and respiratory therapists to receive their R.N. degree in 12 months. Students can receive financial assistance through this grant if qualified.  Participants can receive up to $7,500 per year. Golden said this grant is a service cancelable loan that is paid off if students work in the state upon graduating.

“This program has been very popular since the very beginning. A total of 85 students have graduated from the program since its start,” Golden said.

The continuation of the Special Initiatives Grant will begin for the summer term. Currently, there are 40 students signed up for the transition course starting June 8 and concluding next May.

For more information on this program, interested persons can visit the ABAC web site at www.abac.edu/nursing and click on ‘Transition Track’ for more details.
