ABAC OFFERS AID TO HURRICANE EVACUEES

TIFTON – In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Abraham Baldwin College, in conjunction with the University System of Georgia, will be providing assistance in a number of ways.

A Hurricane Relief donation jar is located on the main floor of the Baldwin Library for anyone who wants to contribute to the relief effort. The Red Cross will pick up these donations. Checks should be made out to the Red Cross.

A collection center is now open in Lewis Hall. The hours of operation for this center are 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The hurricane victims need baby items, bottled water, canned goods, clothing, children’s toys, cleaning supplies, toiletries, blankets/pillows, towels/washcloths, shoes (new), medical supplies, sleeping bags, batteries, and kitchenware.

The Student Life and Housing office is selling numbered plastic ducks for $2 each to raise money for hurricane evacuees.  On Sept. 16, the ducks will be floating in the ABAC fountain, and the owner of the lucky duck will win $400.  A total of 700 ducks are for sale.  All the remaining proceeds will go to aid the evacuees of Hurricane Katrina. To purchase a duck, stop by the Office of Student Life and Housing in the Student Center.

ABAC is offering those students in the affected areas an opportunity to enroll at the college during the 2005 fall term by eliminating some of the regular steps and procedures. Some of these procedures include waiving out-of-state tuition, deferring tuition and fees for those who have already paid in their home state, and allowing students who have already paid for their housing to have a place when space becomes available.

Beth Saxon, Director of Admissions and Registrar at ABAC said, “We are certainly ready, willing and able to help anyone who has been displaced because of the hurricane. As of now, we do not have anyone attending from the hurricane zone, but everything is in place for those who had planned to attend school in the fall in their home state and would like to enroll at ABAC.”
