UNIVERSITY SYSTEM APPROVES PROMOTIONS FOR ABAC FACULTY

TIFTON--The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia recently approved the promotions of six faculty members at Abraham Baldwin College effective Aug. 1, 2005.

        Jeff Newberry was promoted to the rank of assistant professor from instructor. Donna Hatcher, Dr. Marvin Holtz, and Abul Sheikh were promoted to the rank of associate professor from assistant professor. Dr. Mary Ellen Hicks was promoted to the rank of professor from associate professor.

Receiving tenure for the coming year are Hatcher, Sue Wilson, and Dr. Joseph Njoroge.  Tenure may be granted to a faculty member who has served at least five years as an assistant professor and has shown the potential for making significant contributions to the college and in the faculty member’s field. Tenure gives protection a faculty member protection from summary dismissal.

            Newberry, who has been a faculty member at ABAC since 2002, teaches in the Division of Humanities. He received a B.S. and a M.S. degree in English from the University of West Florida.

Hatcher, who began teaching in the Division of Humanities in 2000, earned her B.F.A. in Sculpture and Art History from the University of Georgia and her M.F.A. in Art from Cornell University.

Holtz, who has been a faculty member at ABAC since 2001, teaches in the Division of Science and Mathematics. He holds a B.S. degree in Biology from Lyon College, a M.S. in Biology from Niagara University, and a Ph.D. in Science Education from Florida State University.

Sheikh has been teaching in the Division of Business Administration since 1990. He received his B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from Bangladesh Agricultural University and a M.S. in Computer Science from North Dakota State University.

Hicks is a former ABAC student who has been teaching in the Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources since 1989. She holds a D.V.M in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia.

Njoroge received his B.A. in Political Science and Economics from the University of Tennessee, an M.A. in Political Science from Eastern Kentucky and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Tennessee. Njoroge has taught at ABAC since 2000.

Wilson has taught in the Division of Social Science since 2000. She received her B.S. in Vocational Home Economics and her M.S. in Textiles and Clothing from Colorado State University and her Ed.S. in Education Administration and Supervision from Valdosta State University.
