CAMP WINS DONALDSON AWARD AT ABAC GRADUATION

TIFTON—Mieko Camp, a biology major from Ocilla, received the highest honor presented to a graduating student from Abraham Baldwin College at Saturday’s graduation ceremony. On behalf of the ABAC Alumni Association, ABAC Interim President Tom Call presented Camp with the George P. Donaldson Award for outstanding scholarship and leadership.

Donaldson served as president of ABAC from 1947 - 61. Camp’s award included a plaque and a check for $500 from the ABAC Ag Alumni Council.  The award is based on a combination of academics and extracurricular activities.

A total of 145 students participated in the Gressette Gym ceremony, which featured a speech by one of the graduates, Nancy Lott from Rochelle.

While at ABAC, Camp was a member of several organizations, including the Pre-Vet Club, InterActivities Council, Phi Theta Kappa, the Quiz Bowl team, International Club, and the Honors Program. She also served on the Institutional Effectiveness Committee in 2004. She was the recipient of the Division of Science and Mathematics Award in Biology, the George D. Conger Scholarship, and a Foundation Scholar.

Camp was named to Who’s Who at ABAC and Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. She tutored at both the Writing and Math Centers while at ABAC, receiving the Tutor of the Year Award for the Writing Center. She served as Resident Assistant in Fulwood Hall.

In the community, Camp volunteered at the Tift County YMCA.

Camp plans to attend Georgia College and State University in the fall where she hopes to receive undergraduate and graduate degrees.  After college, she plans to become a research scientist, helping to preserve natural resources.
