SCOTT DAY ACTIVITIES AT ABAC APRIL 15

 

TIFTON-- George Scott Day, a celebration of the arts which includes the 25th annual jazz festival, will take place on April 15, from 10:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. on the front lawn of the Abraham Baldwin College campus.

The event is sponsored by the Humanities Division and the ABAC Music program. In the event of rain, the George Scott activities will be held in the ABAC Chapel of All Faiths and Conger Hall.  The Jazz Festival activities will take place in the Donaldson Dining Hall.

The George Scott Stage will feature performances by various Humanities organizations from the ABAC campus as well as invited guest performers. Art exhibits will be displayed throughout the day. The Pegasus poetry awards will be held at 10:30 a.m., with readings until 11 a.m. The student writers’ conference will begin at that time. The Pegasus readings and art exhibits will be held in the ABAC Music Building.  The ABAC Concert Band and Concert Choir are scheduled to perform at noon. The ABAC Jazz Choir performs at 12:30 p.m.

The ABAC Sabor Latino Dancers will perform from 4:30 -6 p.m. during the dinner hour. At 5 p.m., the Dougherty High School Sax Ensemble will entertain and at 5:15 p.m. the ABAC Clarinet Choir will follow up with a performance of its own. The ABAC Saxophone Quartet will play at 5:30 p.m. and the Tift County Blues Devils will play at 5:45 p.m.  

ABAC clubs and organizations will also have booths and activities throughout the day. The George Scott Celebration is held each year as a tribute to George Scott, an associate professor of English at ABAC, who passed away in 1994.

Starting at 11 a.m. the jazz festival stage will feature performances by Appling County High School, Lowndes High School, Colquitt County High School, Thomas County Central High School, Ware County High School, Lamar County High School, Glynn Academy, Cook High School and Tift County High School. The ABAC Jazz Ensemble will perform at 3 p.m.

Meals will be served to the public during the festival from 11 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. and from 4:30 – 6 p.m. at the charge of $5 per meal. For additional information or for details concerning the schedule for the George Scott Day/ Jazz festival, interested persons can call the ABAC music program office at (229) 386-3094 Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. -5 p.m.

To culminate the jazz festival, there will be a dinner/concert held in the Donaldson Dining Hall featuring Joe Lovano, Grammy award winning saxophonist, and his ensemble “Trio Fascination”. Tickets for the evening concert can be purchased by calling the Abraham Baldwin Arts Connection at (229) 386-3558, Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

All events, except for the Lovano concert, are free of charge. General admission for the Lovano concert is $20 for adults and $15 for students. ABAC students will be admitted free with ID.
