PHILLIPS FIRST RECIPIENT OF NEW ART
SCHOLARSHIP
TIFTON—Meredith Phillips, an art major from Cummings,
is the first recipient of the Marian Jones Girtman Scholarship at
Phillips
said, “I’ve been painting my entire life. My favorite is watercolor but I like
experimenting with oils. I paint a bit of everything.”
Certain
criteria had to be met before Phillips could be awarded the $800 scholarship.
She submitted a portfolio of her work and maintained a GPA of 2.5. Philips also
had to submit an essay for the scholarship process.
Assistant
Professor of Art Donna Hatcher said, “This scholarship has really helped our
program. Meredith has raised the bar. She had the opportunity to travel and
study with other artists, and it shows in her work.”
Besides
being a student, working, and painting, Phillips also teaches art to elementary
school students in Tifton.
Her work was
recently displayed on in the second floor of the music building. “It was a
series of water color and ink drawings I ‘tweaked’ from images in Rolling Stone. The series was meant to
entice viewers into creating a story based on the images for their own personal
needs; a reason to use their imagination,” said Phillips. She sold some of her
work from that series when she showcased her art in November.
“I was
surprised at the turnout and how many people were interested in my work,”
Phillips said. “I had a lot of people
who wanted to see more of my art. It was a great night.”
