COUNTY STUDENTS
TAKE SCIENCE FAIR TITLES
Michelle-Lhyn Cadle from Lowndes
High School was the first place winner in the senior division (grades 9 -
12) and overall grand award winner of the Abraham Baldwin College Regional Science
and Engineering Fair. The title of her project was “What is in the Water of Lowndes County Schools?”
With
her victory, Cadle received a trophy and the Harry R.
Gross Memorial Award. This award is presented to the senior division winner. Cadle’s name will be placed on a traveling plaque that will
be kept at her school for the next year. She will also receive a $100 cash
award, which will be presented at Lowndes High School’s honors program in the spring.
The
second place winner in the senior division was Jacob O’Neal from Lowndes High School. He received a trophy for his project “Effects of School
Music
Programs on Academic Performance.”
Kyle
Williams from Lowndes Middle School
won first place in the junior division (grades 6 - 8) for his project “Angles of Trajectory.”
Suzi Mastrario from Turner County Middle School
won second place in the junior division for her project “Does Color Affect a Person’s Perception of Taste?” Both junior
division winners received trophies.
The
teachers of the first place winners in the senior and junior divisions received
award plaques. Chandler Touchton teaches Cadle,
and Melinda Vonkurbach
teaches Williams.
Portia Thomas of Tuner
County Middle School
won the Suber Award for best junior division project
in the field of entomology. She received a plaque for her project “Which Type
of Food do Ants Prefer?”
The
American Chemical Society Award of a $50 savings bond for the best chemistry
project went to Staci Howard from C.A.
Gray Middle School. The title of her project was “Bare
Necessities?” Her teacher,
Debra Jackson, received a year’s subscription to the Journal of Chemical
Education.
A total of 84 students from three counties
(Lowndes, Turner, and Colquitt) participated in the fair. ABAC Science &
Mathematics Division Chair Ray Barber coordinated the event.
Nineteen
students qualified for the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair (State
Competition) in Athens on April 3 -
5. Qualifiers by county include Cadle, Phillip
Crawford, Kristin Davis, Clayton Griffin, Leeanne
Griffin, Halston Loyd,
O’Neal, Paul Ruddle, Kristen Skinner, Denise Thomas,
Joshua Thomas, Williams, and Leslie Zipperer of Lowndes; Tabitha Hudson and Portia
Thomas of Turner; and Owen Blank, Lester Castello,
Howard, and Brittany Sikes of Colquitt.
