A comic retelling of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the production was staged as a readers theatre, a form in which symbolic movement and
metaphorical images contribute. The actors, or “readers,” sit on stools holding
bound copies of the script, sometimes portraying multiple roles.
“The conventions of readers theatre are to make the audience ever mindful of the importance of the text, as both literature and as dramatic artifact,” Dr. John Galyean, ABAC’s Director of Theatre and the Baldwin Players, said. “The spoken word and the range and power of the human voice are to be celebrated in this highly creative form of theatre.”
