NORMAN PARK STUDENT WINS SPEECH SHOWCASE AT ABAC

Elton Baldy, a pre-veterinary medicine major from Norman Park, won the 34th annual Lew Akin Speech Showcase at Abraham Baldwin College by delivering an informative speech on the beef industry.

Pippa Mpunzwana, a fashion merchandising major from Zimbabwe, came in second place with an informative speech on Victoria Falls.

Every section of ABAC=s Human Communication classes (COMM 1100) was represented in the competition, with the best speaker in each class performing in the competition.  Before the final round of speeches, there were two preliminary rounds. The top three students from each preliminary advanced to the finals.

Each contestant delivered a five to ten minute presentation that was judged on such criteria as content, organization, evidence, and eye contact.

Sheila Hughes, ABAC=s Director of Forensics and Assistant Professor of Communication, coordinated the showcase.

“It was another great showcase,” Hughes said. “Our students and professors work hard in the communication courses, and we’re delighted to have this showcase to highlight what we do.  We’re looking forward to starting our 35th year next fall.”
