CONTINUING EDUCATION AT ABAC TOPS IN STATE

Abraham Baldwin College’s continuing education program exceeded every two-year college in the state in participants and number of programs offered, according to the 2002-03 report from the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia on Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Activities.

Diane Kilgore, Director of ABAC’s Public Service & Business Outreach Center (PSBOC), said a total of 27, 705 people participated in 2,223 continuing education programs at ABAC from May 2002 - April 2003.

In terms of programs offered, ABAC ranks third in the state among all 34 institutions in the University System of Georgia, finishing below the University of Georgia and Kennesaw State University.

“The mission of the continuing education program here at ABAC is to provide expertise and continuous learning opportunities for professional development, personal enrichment, and recreation, Kilgore said. “We are committed to helping members of the community and their families with their educational needs to ensure a lifetime of happiness and success—whether that includes summer fun for their children, focusing on a new career, improving job skills for their current position, learning a new hobby, or just having fun.”

The PSBOC offers courses in business and professional development, computer training, health and physical improvement, creative arts and music, personal enrichment, and ABAC’s popular Kids’ College.

Certificate programs are also popular. The PSBOC offers certificates in floral design, landscape, management, medical billing and coding, and photography plus over 500 teacher-led and on-line classes each semester.

“Continuing education classes provide an opportunity to update professional skills, prepare people for finding a job and job promotions, improve personal life, and learn new skills for more enjoyment of leisure time,” Kilgore said. “Courses are open to all interested members of the community. There are no tests, no grades, and, as a general rule, no admission requirements for classes and activities. Instruction is offered in an informal and non-competitive environment.”
