CONTINUING EDUCATION AT ABAC TOPS IN STATE

The 2002 annual report from the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia on Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Activities indicates that Abraham Baldwin College has exceeded every two-year college in the state in participants and number of programs offered.

According to Diane Kilgore, Director of ABAC’s Public Service and Business Outreach Center (PSBOC), a total of 19,419 people participated in 1,629 continuing education programs at ABAC last year.

In terms of programs offered, ABAC ranks third in the state among all 34 institutions in the University System of Georgia, finishing below the University of Georgia and Kennesaw State University.

“The mission of our continuing education program here at ABAC is to provide expertise and continuous learning opportunities for personal development, professional growth, and Georgia’s economic well being,” Kilgore said.

The PSBOC offers courses and workshops in professional development, computer training, physical improvement, and personal enrichment. Also offered are “co-listed” courses--college credit courses offered on a space available basis for CEU credit only. The PSBOC offers these non-credit co-listed classes in the Business, Humanities, and Health and Physical Education divisions.

Non-credit certificate programs are also popular. The PSBOC now has certificates in floral design, human resource management, landscape, management, Microsoft Office, photography, small business success, and web page design and also offers over 200 on-line classes.

“These classes provide an opportunity to update professional skills, prepare for finding a job and job promotions, improve personal life, and learn new skills for more enjoyment of leisure time,” Kilgore said. “Courses are open to all interested members of the public. There are no tests, no grades, and, as a general rule, no admission requirements for classes and activities.”
