BASKETBALL MANIA CELEBRATION SEPTEMBER 29 AT ABAC

Basketball season will get an early start at Abraham Baldwin College on Sept. 29 when the annual Moonlight Mania celebration takes place at 7 p.m. at Gressette Gym.   Basketball coaches Julie Conner and Todd Sheppard and the Office of Student Life and Housing are sponsoring the fourth annual faculty/staff versus students basketball game, and fans will also get their first look at this year’s ABAC basketball teams.

Any ABAC faculty or staff member is welcome to play in the game. Any ABAC student, except members of the Fillies’ and Stallions’ squads, is welcome to play on the student team. Anyone interested in playing should contact Conner at (229) 386-3927.  There is no charge to attend or play.

The evening will also include the famous Recliner Shootout where students shoot baskets while sitting in a recliner, and the student who hits the most shots takes home the chair.  The Cash Crawl features a blindfolded student scrambling around the gym floor picking up as many dollar bills as he can round up.  The ABAC Ambassadors will also be on hand for Half Court for $100 where a spectator gets to shoot one shot from halfcourt to win $100.

The 2003 - 04 Stallions and Fillies will be introduced, and the teams will engage in intra-squad scrimmages for 20 minutes each. Oct. 1 is the first day official practice is allowed.

“This basketball game has become a great tradition at ABAC,” Conner said. “Both the students and the faculty and staff members look forward to it, and the game helps everyone involved see each other in a more relaxed setting. After two successful seasons, the Fillies now have 12 new players that I would love everyone to meet.”

Sheppard said bringing together the students, faculty, and staff in a social setting is great for the college.

“This game is a great opportunity to sell basketball and the spirit that is ABAC,” Sheppard said, “It’s an exciting time for any coach and team. I anticipate our team to be very energetic, and I’m looking forward to this event.”
