Kim Ascani has accepted the position of Coordinator of the Academic Assistance Center (AAC) at Abraham Baldwin College, effective immediately. She has served in that position on an interim basis since January 2002.

Ascani, who has been at ABAC for six years, is an ABAC alumna. Prior to accepting the position of Interim Coordinator of the AAC, she served as secretary in the Center. Ascani’s responsibilities include maintaining daily operations of the AAC, hiring, training, and supervising tutors, recruiting faculty volunteers, coordinating student success workshops, and promoting the AAC.

Ascani said she gained a lot of experience while serving as the Interim Coordinator.

“I believe people learn best by doing,” she said. “Serving as interim has given me the ‘hands-on’ experience to prepare me for the position on a permanent basis. Phyllis Bennett [ABAC’s Director of Learning Support] and Tom Call [ABAC’s Vice President of Student and Enrollment Services] have been very supportive, and I know they will both continue to be there for me if I have questions or concerns.”

One of Ascani’s primary goals is for the AAC to be accessible to as many students as possible.

“The AAC provides support materials to assist students in their studies and also offers workshops to enhance study skills,” she said. “I would like to find ways to add to the materials and workshops we offer. I see the AAC continuing to grow in the services it offers—not only to the ABAC campus, but to the Moultrie campus as well.

“The AAC is so important for students. All students need a good study environment in which to develop their study habits. The Academic Assistance Center provides all of this at no charge.  Since they do not need to make an appointment, students can come in anytime that is convenient for them—in between classes, during their lunch breaks, or before or after work. When students who use the Academic Assistance Center leave ABAC, they find they have developed the study skills they need to be successful as they continue their college career. And that is our goal—student success.”

Bennett said she believes the AAC will continue to grow and improve under Ascani’s excellent leadership.

“Kim’s past experience with the Academic Assistance Center and her rapport with the students enable her to relate to their academic needs,” Bennett said. “She encourages students in a way that makes them feel comfortable in seeking help. I am sure she will continue to do a great job working with our students.”
