BALDWIN PLAYERS TO PERFORM MARCH 14 - 16

The Baldwin Players of Abraham Baldwin College will present the comedy "Sylvia" on March 14 - 16 in Room 319 in Conger Hall on the ABAC campus. Showtime is at 7:30 p.m. each night. General admission is $5. There is no charge for ABAC faculty, staff, and students. Tickets will be available at the door, but seating is limited. Theatregoers are encouraged to come early.

The cast includes Lisa Alexander of Hiram as Sylvia, Ken Frazier of Tifton as Greg, Michele Farrar of Cordele as Phyllis, Sherrie Hines of Chula as Kate, Victoria Ledbetter of Tifton as Leslie, and Josh Romero of Tifton as Tom Tex and Hadji. Carla Whitley of Tifton designed the costumes. The Assistant Director/Stage Manager is Paula Teague of East Ellijay.

Dr. John Galyean, ABAC's Director of Theatre and the Baldwin Players, said the play is intended for more mature audiences.

"The comic play is about a middle-aged couple struggling with marital problems," Galyean said. "If I had to assign a rating to the play, I would classify it somewhere between PG-13 and NC-17 because of the strong language and mature situations. I've cut a lot of profanity from the play, but some 'salty' language was left in. I am not for censorship, but I am sensitive to the cultural milieu in which I live. More important is the fact that it's a really touching and very funny play about our relationship with our pets."

"Sylvia," a comedy written by noted Broadway playwright A. R. Gurney (Love Letters, The Dining Room), features a married couple who are drifting apart. Greg, the husband, discovers a stray dog named Sylvia and seems to fall in love with her almost immediately. He and the loveable poodle mix have no trouble communicating with each other, but his wife, Kate, feels Sylvia is a rival for affection. As a result, the marriage is put in serious jeopardy. However, all's well that ends well, and the three become a happy family.
