In addition to the overall first place win, The Stallion also received second place for best sports coverage. Editor Nathan Johnson of Tifton took first place for best column, and Vickie Harsey of Enigma placed second for best feature writing.
Eric Cash, Director of Student Media, said he is very pleased with the staff's showing at the SRPI awards.
"I couldn't be more pleased at the abilities and efforts of our newspaper staff," Cash said. "They continue to set and surpass new standards of excellence in journalism for ABAC and the system as a whole."
The SRPI awards cover the 2001 calendar year. The Fall 2001 newspaper staff included Johnson, editor; Kristin MacKenzie of Fitzgerald, news editor; Caroline Kitchens of Tifton and Jake Martin of Rebecca, sports editors; Katie Davis of Tifton, entertainment editor; Harsey, business manager; and Beth Phillips of Douglas, ad representative. Bo Moore of Tifton was editor for Spring 2001. Chris Brady of Moultrie was news editor.
The Stallion also earned first place for General Excellence among two-year colleges from the Georgia College Press Association (GCPA) in January.
