ART EXHIBITS IN CORDELE AND ABAC

BEGIN IN FEBRUARY

Henry Pernell Johnson, an African-American artist and professor of art at Savannah College of Art and Design, will display his exhibit "Family Reminiscences" during the month of February. The exhibit is part of the "Celebrating Cultural Diversity" project sponsored by Abraham Baldwin College.

There will be two exhibits of Pernell's artwork. One will be held Feb. 2 - 14 at the Cordele-Crisp Carnegie Library in Cordele. A reception will be given by the Valorette Social and Civic Club on Feb. 2 at 3 p.m. An exhibit will also be held Feb. 19 - 28 at in Room 202 in the Baldwin Library on the ABAC campus. A reception will be given by the ABAC Art Program and the ABAC Foundation on Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. The exhibits are open to the public and will be held during the libraries' hours of operation.

Johnson said the art exhibit focuses on his family.

"I looked through photos of my family and worked from them to create my paintings," Johnson said. "I was moved to do this because I was away from my family, and it helped me reflect on both the past and the present and the people I love."

Johnson will also speak to the art classes at Crisp County High School on Feb. 1 and to students in ABAC's art classes on Feb. 15. He will discuss themes and techniques in his work.

"I am really looking forward to talking to the students and sharing with them," Johnson said. "Talking about my art is a way of giving back, and it keeps me motivated and excited about my work."

This project is supported by the Georgia Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities and through appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly.
