BROOKS WINS SPEECH SHOWCASE AT ABAC

Robert Brooks, an agriculture major from Cuthbert, won the 34th annual Lew Akin Speech Showcase at Abraham Baldwin College by delivering a persuasive speech on sleep.

Anna Haire, a speech/drama major from Sylvester, came in second place with an informative speech on aromatherapy.

One student from each of the Communications 1000 and 1100 classes was represented in the competition, with the best speaker in each class selected for the competition. Before the final round of speeches, there were two preliminary rounds. The top three students from each preliminary advanced to the finals.

Each contestant delivered a five to ten minute informative or persuasive presentation that was judged on such criteria as content, organization, evidence, and eye contact.

Sheila Hughes, Assistant Professor of Communication at ABAC, coordinated the showcase.

“The showcase was another great opportunity to show off the talent at ABAC and promote the Division of Humanities,” Hughes said. “We had a variety of outstanding speeches this semester.”
