HISPANIC AUTHOR LECTURES COMING UP

IN TIFTON AND OCILLA

          In celebration of Women's History Month, Yolanda Emery will discuss the writings of Hispanic author Isabel Allende on March 11 at Abraham Baldwin College. She will also address Allende's writings on March 12 in Ocilla and on March 14 in Tifton in a special presentation in Spanish.

          Emery's presentation is part of the lecture series, "Literature as a Reflection of Culture." The lecture series is part of the project "Celebrating Cultural Diversity," which is sponsored by ABAC's Division of Humanities. Emery, who was born in Puerto Rico, is bilingual. She is an instructor of Spanish at ABAC who also teaches English classes.

          The lecture at ABAC will be held March 11 at 3 p.m. in Room 202 in the Baldwin Library. A lecture will also be held March 12 at 7 p.m. at the Irwin County Library in Ocilla. The lectures are open to the public. An additional lecture in Spanish will be held March 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall of Our Divine Saviour Catholic Church in Tifton. This lecture is particularly aimed at the Hispanic community of Tifton.

          Allende, who is of Chilean descent, is the author of several novels, including The House of the Spirits, Of Love and Shadows, Eva Luna, Daughter of Fortune, and Portrait in Sepia. Her books have been translated into more than 27 languages and have been best sellers in Europe, the United States, Latin America, and Australia. She has received numerous awards for her writing.

          "Celebrating Cultural Diversity" is a project supported by the Georgia Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities and through appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly.
