"Non-traditional students have more life experiences and are generally more focused," Brown said. "We know how to budget our time because so many of us are juggling careers, family, and school. I believe these life skills give us an edge over students who are coming to college straight out of high school. I have found that age is not a handicap at all."
Brown, who lives in Ashburn, said she decided to enroll at ABAC because she wanted to increase her earning potential. She loved her job as a para-professional in the Turner County School System, but she knew the only way to advance was to further her education.
"Enrolling in college was a difficult decision for me to make because I was leaving the security of a job," Brown said. "But my family was very supportive and encouraged me. Going to school was something I really wanted to do, so I decided to devote myself full-time to my college career. In addition to the support I receive from my family, my friends and former co-workers are also a great cheerleading section."
Brown said she loves everything about attending classes at ABAC.
"College is very fulfilling," Brown said. "I love attending classes and doing homework. My first semester was difficult, but I have gained a lot of confidence since then, and I know I can achieve my goals. I am doing this for myself, and it is something I really want.
"I like ABAC so much because everyone is helpful and supportive. The professors are very understanding and encourage students like myself who have families. I have never encountered a problem at ABAC that couldn't be solved. Everything students need to be successful is right here on campus, and if they utilize all of the resources available to them, it makes a world of difference. I really wish ABAC was a four-year school so that I could stay here and earn my bachelor's degree.
Brown, who will graduate from ABAC in the Spring of 2002, plans to attend Georgia Southwestern State University. After completing her college education, she wants to pursue a career teaching fourth and fifth grade students. Brown and her husband, Bobby, have three children, Jason, Katie, and Russell. She also has four adult stepchildren, Pam, Lee, Joy, and Kevin, who have families of their own.
