An individualized program will be designed for students, and the instructor will work one on one with them. Students must be under the care of a physician and must present a letter from their doctor giving them permission to participate in the course activities. The doctor must approve all of the activities in which students will participate.
Andrea Willis, Assistant Professor and Interim Division Chair of the Division of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, said these courses will greatly enhance the quality of life for students.
"In the past, students who could not participate in physical education classes were exempt," Willis said. "Now, they can benefit from physical activity through an adaptive class and also receive physical education credits. One of the missions of the college is to enhance the lives of students, not just academically but in all areas. We must strive to meet the needs of all of our students."
Dr. Bettie Horne, ABAC's Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs, said Willis has done a great job in working with the local resources at ABAC and within her area to create some excellent options for students.
"I'm particularly pleased with the new course offerings in modified physical education, which will allow students with health problems that prevent them from taking part in traditional courses to have activities tailored to their abilities, helping them achieve and maintain lifetime physical fitness," Horne said.
