ABAC Foundation President Melvin Merrill said Dollars for Scholars began in 1972 as ABAC's way of raising money for student scholarships.
"In the beginning, Dollars for Scholars was just a fund-raiser," Merrill said. "But through the years, it has become a popular social function every spring, offering entertainment by popular performers, excellent food, and fellowship within the community. All of these components make for a very festive evening. The event also brings people to ABAC who have no association with the college and is a good recruitment tool."
Through the years, many well-known entertainers have performed at Dollars for Scholars. Performers have included Anita Bryant, Eddy Arnold, Pat Boone, Ray Stevens, Barbara Mandrell, Debby Boone, Louise Mandrell, Debbie Reynolds, Mel Tillis, Roy Clark, Shirley Jones, Kathy Mattea, Marie Osmond, Brenda Lee, Helen Reddy, Jack Jones and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Ricky Van Shelton, Lee Greenwood, and many more.
Ralph and Evelyn Edwards of Tifton have attended 28 of the events over the years.
"Our primary reason for attending Dollars for Scholars is that it provides money for the students," Ralph Edwards said. "In addition to that, the food is delicious, the entertainment is superb, and the fellowship is great. It's the perfect combination for an enjoyable evening for anyone, regardless of their age."
Merrill said Dollars for Scholars will continue to be an annual event at ABAC for as long as possible.
"Dollars for Scholars is a great program for the college," Merrill said. "It's a great way to bring the community together, and it provides a valuable service to students since all net proceeds from the event go to the student scholarship program."
