ABAC TIPS OFF BASKETBALL SEASON NOVEMBER 6

With a brand new coach at the controls, the Abraham Baldwin College Golden Stallions' basketball team will tip off this year's season on Nov. 6 in Gainesville, Fla., against Santa Fe.

Coach Robert Moore, who is the new men's basketball coach at ABAC, said the team has many strengths.

"Our main strength is that we have a good nucleus on the bench--four sophomores who played last year and nine freshmen--who can consistently play every game," Moore said. "Our other strengths include our quickness and our ball-handling, shooting, and rebounding. We have to have all of these skills in order to be a good basketball team."

Moore said the competition that the Stallions will face this season is going to be tough. The conference schedule includes games against Middle Georgia and Georgia Perimeter, and the out-of-conference schedule consists mostly of teams from Florida and Alabama.

As a coach, Moore said he personally faces several challenges, especially as a first-time head coach of a college team.

"My biggest challenge will be to keep all 15 players academically eligible," Moore said. "I also need to get the guys to play hard and work together as a team. And I want to make sure that they move on from ABAC academically to a four-year institution. In addition, one of my main objectives is to get a lot of support for the Stallions from the faculty, staff, and students. I plan to go to area elementary and middle schools and try to get the students to attend our games. I think we'll all have a fun time, win some games, and it will be interesting to see how the players handle the competition."

Moore also said that four of his players are in the process of being recruited by NCAA Division I and Division II schools: Edward Benton, a sophomore from Atlanta; Marquise Wilcher, a freshman from Columbus; Nicholas Clark, a sophomore from Brunswick; and John Toombs, a freshman from Columbus. Moore said these four players have the best chance of being first team all-conference players.

Moore replaces Donnie Veal, who retired after last season. The Stallions' first home game is on Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. against Aiken Tech.
