'BUDDIES IN SCHOOL' MENTORING PROGRAM

BEGINS IN IRWIN COUNTY

Abraham Baldwin College's GEAR UP (Gain Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) has partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Georgia to begin a mentoring program titled "Buddies in School" in Irwin County. ABAC will serve the GEAR UP audience of seventh and eighth graders in Irwin County.

"Buddies in School" is a site-based mentoring program that allows volunteers to meet with students one hour per week in the school setting. Meetings are restricted to the school setting. The initial orientation session was recently held at Irwin Electric Membership Corporation (EMC). There were four volunteers from EMC as well as one from the middle school. After the screening process, the mentors will be matched with a "Little Buddy."

Kimberly Keen, ABAC's GEAR UP Program Specialist, said GEAR UP is very excited to have this partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Georgia.

"We look forward to working with the volunteers in Irwin County who will make a real difference in the lives of our students," she said. "GEAR UP itself is a partnership, and we are committed to bringing resources into the county that will continue to benefit the citizens for many years to come."

Keen and Robin Jones, GEAR UP Counselor, are in charge of the program at the middle school.
