First Tuesday Concert This Week

   The sixth concert in the First Tuesday Performance Series on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths will feature an evening of chamber music. The concert will include performances by a well-known professional solo artist accompanied by an ABAC faculty member and a distinguished chamber ensemble, featuring an ABAC adjunct professor as one of its members.

   The performers will include David Lee Johnson, baritone; and his wife, ABAC Social Science faculty member Susan Johnson, as his accompanist. The Mannheim Trio, which includes Sheri Grabowski, an ABAC adjunct professor, flute; Lesli Bellflower Holton, flute; and Betsy Sone Jones, cello; will also perform.

   Tickets for the performance may be purchased at the door. The cost is $3 for adults and $1 for students. ABAC students are admitted free with ID. Patrons of the Arts and Entertainment Series can also attend at no charge. For additional information, contact the Arts Connection at 386-3558.

 

Stampede Begins Thursday

   The Tenth Annual Peach State Stampede will be held Thursday-Saturday at the ABAC Rodeo Arena.  Under the direction of Rodeo Coach Doug Hicks, the ABAC Rodeo Team will compete against teams from Auburn University, Mississippi State University, Michigan State University, Murray State University, the University of Tennessee at Martin, the University of West Alabama, Troy State University, and the University of Georgia as well as several other teams. 

  Men’s events include bareback, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, team roping, calf roping, and bull riding. Women will compete in break-away calf roping, goat tying, team roping, and barrel racing.

  Performances begin each evening at 7:30 p.m. at the ABAC Rodeo Arena. Ticket prices are $5 at the gate.

 

State  Basketball Tourney Here

   The 16 best two-year college basketball teams in Georgia will meet on the campus of Abraham Baldwin on Wednesday-Saturday for the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XVII tournament. 

   ABAC Coach Robert Moore said the top eight teams from the regular season standings will begin play on the men’s side of the tournament on Wednesday. Games will be held at 2, 4, 6, and 8 p.m.  As the host team, the Golden Stallions of ABAC will play in the 8 p.m. game.

   ABAC Coach Julie Conner said the women’s teams will play on Thursday at 2, 4, 6, and 8 p.m.  Her Golden Fillies are the defending state champions and will begin their title defense at 8 p.m. on that day.

   “Winning the state tournament last year was such a big thrill for us,” Conner said.  “I’m just looking forward to bringing the state tournament atmosphere here to Gressette Gym and giving all our great fans a chance to see these teams compete against each other at one site.”

   Women’s semifinal games will be held Friday at 2 and 6 p.m.  Men’s semifinal games will be held Friday at 4 and 8 p.m. The women’s championship will be held Saturday at 5:30 p.m., and the men’s title game will be at 7:30 p.m.

   Tickets will be available at Gressette Gym at a cost of $6 per day (no re-entry) or $20 for a tournament pass which allows re-entry on all four days.

   ABAC hosted the men’s tournament in 1982 and hosted the women’s tournament in 1984. Tournament champions will advance to the NJCAA national tournament. For more information on the tournament, contact Moore at 386-3932 or Conner at 386-3927.

 

Thanks to Everyone

   Thank you to all faculty, staff, and students who helped make Open Campus Day 2003 a tremendous success.  Admissions Director Angie Palmer reported 872 student visitors and 110 parents, teachers, and counselors, for a grand total of 982 visitors to our campus last Wednesday.  Food Services Director B.J. Smith said 484 visiting students ate in the dining hall, along with 83 parents, teachers, and counselors.  Hopefully many of these students will choose ABAC for their college careers.

 

Baseball This Weekend

   The Golden Stallions of Coach Steve Janousek will host Young Harris for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and for a 2 p.m. game on Sunday.  Catch all the action on Kool 97.7 featuring the vibrant tones of Emory Johnson on Saturday.

 

Tennis This Afternoon

   The Golden Stallions and Golden Fillies will host Georgia Perimeter for a 1 p.m. match today at the ABAC Tennis Center.  The Stallions will play Indiana Wesleyan at home on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.  The Fillies will be at home at noon on Saturday against arch rival Middle Georgia.

 

Softball on Two Days

   Catch the Golden Fillies of Coach Donna Campbell for doubleheaders at Fillie Field on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.

   The deadline for submitting an application and paying a deposit for ABAC’s Hawaii trip this summer is Friday.  The cost for the 10-day trip is approximately $2,795. Projected dates of the trip are June 5-14.  Contact Katrina Williams at 3267 or email her at kwilliam for more information. 

 

Dessert Raffle Today

   The ABAC Relay for Life Team is holding a dessert raffle each day this week.  You can purchase a ticket from any team member at a cost of $5 per ticket.  Team members include Donna Lott, Patricia Barber, Missy Hutto, Geoff Clement, Dr. Donna Miller, Pattie Clark, Amanda Hagood, Dianne Hardy, Lea Newton, Lisa Waller, Thomas Futch, Lindsey Willis, Jessica Purcell, Dr. Kay Weeks, Stephanie Gress, Cathy Rogers (Circle K Club), Maria Aguire, and Judy Shiflet.

   ARAMARK, the food service and custodial provider at ABAC, has been named the number one company in “Diversified Outsourcing Services” in Fortune Magazine’s new ranking of America’s Most Admired Companies.   ARAMARK has also moved from number 48 to number 10 in overall score of America’s Most Admired Companies.

 

Official Holidays

    Interim Registrar Beth Saxon recently released the list of official ABAC holidays for 12-month employees for the rest of 2003.  They include July 4, Sept. 1, Nov. 27-28, and Dec. 24-31.  Holidays for 2004 include Jan. 1-2, Jan. 19, July 5, Sept. 6, Nov. 25-26, and Dec. 27-31.

 

Cake Auction Wednesday

   The Quiz Bowl Team will hold a cake auction Wednesday-Friday of this week to raise money for the trip to the national tournament in Los Angeles.  Mark your calendar and get ready for your email bids.

 

May-mester on the Way

   Please remind your students they can sign up for May-mester which will run from May 9-29.  Exams will be held on May 30.  It might be a great way to pick up an additional class.  May-mester is a part of the summer term for registration.

 

Mr. ABAC to be Chosen March 11

   Thirty-seven men attending Abraham Baldwin will compete for the title of Mr. ABAC in the 13th annual competition on March 11. The theme for this year’s event is “City Slickers.” Sponsored, produced, and directed by the Family and Consumer Sciences Club, the event will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Donaldson Dining Hall. The cost is $2 for ABAC students with student ID and $3 for general admission.

   Contestants are sponsored by campus clubs, athletic teams, residence halls, and student media. They will compete in casual attire, formal attire, and interview categories. Contestants will also be judged on a written timed essay. The top contestant will receive a plaque and a cash prize. A contestant’s award will also be given. The recipient of this award is chosen by the other contestants. The Family and Consumer Sciences Club members will choose “Mr. Photogenic,” “Best Eyes,” “Best Smile,” and other awards.

   Dotty Davis from B-100 will emcee the event. Entertainment will be provided by the ABAC Gospel Choir and the ABAC dance group Sabor Latino. Family and Consumer Sciences Club President Katie Stripling of Moultrie will present the award to Mr. ABAC 2003. Last year’s winner was Nathan Johnson of Tifton.

 

Congratulations!

   Sue and David Wilson are the proud grandparents of Lauren Elizabeth Rhodes born on Feb. 24.  Lauren weighed seven pounds, 10 ounces and was 20½ inches long.  Her parents are Keith and Kerri Rhodes of Roswell.  Congratulations to all!

 

Note of Sympathy

   The ABAC Family expresses sympathy to Mary Lewis Walker, retired ABAC Business Office staff member, whose husband, Milton Walker, passed away recently.  Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers.

ABAC Family

   Rita Wade and Cheryl Biggs accompanied four students to Atlanta on Feb. 21-23 to attend the GASPP Student Leadership Conference.  This year’s conference included debate teams and a talent show in which our students participated.  Susan Harper won third place in the talent competition and received a check for $25.  Other students attending were Toney Clark, Teresa Nave, and Randall Hunt.

   Northwest Georgia recruiter Robin Poor spoke with Ag Ed students at Rockmart, Paulding County, and LaFayette high schools, as well as visiting Pepperell, Floyd Technical, Hiram, Central, Bowdon, and Carroll County high schools during the week of Jan. 3.    She also served as a judge for the Governor’s Honors Program in the area of agriscience and biotechnology at Clayton State on Jan. 7-8.
