ripped up. Please be very careful in
that area. For other

ABAC website.
Regents Here October 8-9
Chancellor Thomas Meredith and the Board of
Regents of the University System of Georgia will meet on the ABAC campus on
Oct. 8-9. It is the first meeting of the
Board on the ABAC campus since 1984.
The activities will begin with lunch in the
Magnolia Room on Oct. 8, followed by the 1 p.m. start of the actual Board
Meeting in the Cordell Conference Room.
President Mike Vollmer will make a presentation about ABAC. He will be assisted by Dr. Chrystle Ross, the ABAC Ambassadors, and five members of
the Office of Information Technology Services staff. The Regents will each use a PDA as directed
by Dr. Ross and assisted by the Ambassadors and the OITS staff.
At 3 p.m. the Regents will board a chartered
bus and take a tour of the college. Dr.
Larry Allen and students from the Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources
will host brief stops at the animal science area and at the Rodeo Arena. The Regents will also tour the Coastal Plain
Experiment Station that afternoon. Regent John Hunt will host a dinner for the
Regents and their guests at his home that evening.
On Oct. 9, the Regents will begin their day
with a breakfast in the Magnolia Room, followed by a 9 a.m. meeting in the
Carlton Center which will be highlighted by a one-hour presentation on
agriculture from ABAC, Fort Valley State University, and the University of
Georgia. Dr. Allen and ABAC student Ben
Kennedy will present the ABAC information.
The meeting should adjourn at approximately 11:30 a.m.
The University System Knowledge is Power
Tour will immediately follow the Regents meeting from noon-2 p.m. Sponsored by the Intellectual Capital
Partnership Program (ICAPP), the KIP Tour is the ninth in a series of events
which highlights the University System’s current and proposed efforts to
encourage regional and statewide economic development by utilizing the
intellectual capital on the University System of Georgia’s 34 campuses to meet
business needs.
In addition to ABAC, the event on Oct. 9
will highlight the resources of South Georgia College, Valdosta State
University, and Waycross College.
Chancellor Meredith will be the keynote speaker at the event. President Vollmer and the presidents from
South Georgia, Valdosta State, and Waycross will also be speaking briefly about
their institutions.
These two events will take the cooperation
of everyone on campus. Please make our
visitors feel welcome.
Take
Pride in ABAC Tuesday
The third Take Pride in ABAC Day will be held Tuesday at 4 p.m. on the

Three
Golden Trash Awards worth $20 each will be hidden somewhere on campus. There will also be ice cold Stallion Water
available, as well as gloves and trash bags.
Do your part to help keep ABAC clean.

McClain Receives New Scholarship
Beverly McClain, a human services technology
major from Tifton, is the first recipient of the new $500 Dorris
Garrison Nelson Memorial Scholarship at ABAC.
The Tift County Council on Child Abuse,
under the coordination of
Lillie McEntyre, president, and Lisa
Reinhardt, past president, created the scholarship, which will be administered
by the ABAC Foundation.
The Tift County Council on Child Abuse is a
volunteer council that raises money to help provide programs and assistance in
order to prevent child abuse.
“The Council decided to start a scholarship
for Human Services majors at ABAC so they can receive a quality education in
the field and go on to pursue careers in which they can help children,”
Reinhardt said. “The scholarship was set up as a memorial to honor Dorris Garrison Nelson of Tifton for her work with
children.”
One scholarship will be awarded annually to
a graduate of Tift County High School or Tiftarea
Academy. The recipient must be a rising ABAC sophomore in the Division of
Social Science with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Preference will be given to
students majoring in Human Services. The ABAC Scholarship and Awards Committee
will select the recipient each year from the applications received based upon
recommendations from faculty/advisors in the Division of Social Science. To
continue receiving the scholarship, the student must maintain a cumulative
Regents’ grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
ABAC Foundation President Melvin Merrill
said the Foundation enjoys a multifaceted service mission to ABAC and the
community.
“We are pleased to work with members of the
Tift County Council on Child Abuse to achieve their goal and make this
scholarship possible,” Merrill said. “We thank them for establishing the
scholarship and for their dedication to children.”
