Honors Day Wednesday
The annual Honors Day ceremony at ABAC will take place on Wednesday beginning at 11
a.m. in Gressette Gym. The Distinguished, Superior, and Honor students will be recognized,
along with all scholarship and divisional award winners. The top faculty member, staff member,
and administrator will also be recognized with awards from the ABAC Foundation. Classes will
be dismissed at 10:30 a.m. and will resume at 2 p.m.
Alumni Honored at Homecoming
Former ABAC students were honored for professional achievement, community service, and service to the college during the 2002 ABAC Alumni Association Homecoming Awards Banquet on Saturday.
Award recipients included Charles H. Bronson, Distinguished Alumnus; J. Tyron Spearman, J. Lamar Branch Award; Helen Sears Joiner, Helen Brown Sasser Award; Allen Whitehead, Master Farmer; Joy R. Carter, Outstanding Young Alumnus; Danny and Beverly Sterling, Outstanding Business Leader Award; Michael D. Moye, Outstanding Educator; and Keith N. Phillippi, M.D., Outstanding Health Care Professional Award. The Family Legacy Award was presented to the J. B. Miles Family. Dr. Leon Benefield, Merle Baker, and Bob Reinhardt earned Honorary Alumnus Awards.
Other Homecoming activities included the groundbreaking for the new Ag Sciences Building, a
speech on the future of agriculture at ABAC by President Mike Vollmer, and an open house for
the Environmental Horticulture Building.
MAP/MRO Conference This Week
ABAC will host the 18th annual Minority Advising Program/Minority Recruitment Officers (MAP/MRO) Conference on Thursday and Friday. The theme for this year's conference is "Coming Together: Knowing What the Issues Are and How to Address Them."
The conference is co-chaired by ABAC staff members Wasdon Graydon, MAP Director;
Marsha Anderson, MAP Coordinator; and Carlos Howard, Minority Recruitment Officer. They
keynote speakers are Regent Elridge McMillan and Dr. Joe Martin.
Town Hall Meeting Tuesday
A town hall meeting will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Cordell Conference Room of the
Carlton Center. A six-member panel will answer students' questions in the areas of academics,
residence life, student services, food services, and other important issues. Encourage your
students to attend.
Poetry & Pizza Tuesday
The Baldwin Library is sponsoring its third annual Poetry and Pizza Day in recognition of
national poetry Month on Tuesday from 12:30-1:30 p.m. If you wish, bring a poem to read of
your own or someone else's penning to Room 202 of the Baldwin Library.
Spring Concert Thursday
The Abraham Baldwin Concert Band will host a joint concert with the Fitzgerald High School Symphonic Band on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the Tift County High School campus.
The program will consist of several selections by each of the bands. The musical selections will range from transcriptions of orchestral pieces to contemporary concert band literature. There is no charge to attend.
ABAC's Concert Band, under the direction of Eugene Wyles, will perform Giacchino Rossini's
overture to the opera Tancredi, Richard Wagner's Siegfried's Funeral Music from the third opera
of the cycle, The Rings of Nibelung, and Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo by Malcolm Arnold.
Sports This Week
The ABAC men's tennis team will host Valdosta State today at 2 p.m. at the ABAC Tennis Center. VSU is ranked second in the nation. The Stallions will also host Georgia Perimeter College Friday at 1 p.m. and Central Alabama Saturday at 9 a.m.
The Fillies' tennis team will host VSU today at 2 p.m., Middle Georgia Thursday at 2:30 p.m., Young Harris Friday at 4 p.m., and Central Alabama Saturday at 4 p.m. at the ABAC Tennis Center.
The Golden Fillies' softball team will take on Gordon College in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at
Fillie Field on Thursday.
Tuesday Night at the Movies
The Baldwin Film group will sponsor the 1992 movie Thunderheart on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in
the Nickelodeon. The film runs for 119 minutes and is rated R. It was directed by Michael
Apted. There is no charge. This movie was postponed from last week.
Relay for Life Cake Raffle
An Italian Cream cake made by Nancy Coleman will be this week's featured item in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life's weekly cake raffle. Each week through April 19, a different homemade cake will be raffled through a drawing to be held each Friday at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased through noon each Friday at a cost of $2 each from Lori Pearman, Patricia Barber, Shirley Wilson, Gillian McWhorter, Hazel Purvis, Michelle Barton, Janice Payne, Vickie Wilson, Kay Weeks, Dina Willis, Kristi Abad, or Judy Shiflet.

Open Campus Day April 20
The annual Spring Open Campus Day will be held on April 20 in the Cordell Conference
Room of the Carlton Center. Set-up for academic exhibits will be on April 19 from 1-5 p.m. in
the Cordell Conference Room. All exhibits must be set up by 9 a.m. on April 20.
Reception on April 23
The annual Retirement Reception to honor those ABAC employees who have retired since the
last reception or are about to retire will be held on April 23 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the
Donaldson Dining Hall. So far the list includes Nancy Scott from the Division of Business
Administration, Dr. Charlotte Pfeiffer from the Division of Humanities, and Vivian Pearman,
administrative assistant in the President's Office.
Congratulations!
Paul Foote visited Georgia State University on March 27 where he successfully defended is
doctoral dissertation. He will graduate in May with his Ph.D. in political science.
8th Street Visits ABAC Nursing
Twenty-three students accompanied by their school counselor, Linda Reeves, from Eighth Street Middle School visited the Division of Nursing on April 1 to learn about the career of nursing. The students were welcomed by President Mike Vollmer, Tom Call, and Wanda Golden.
The students were given information regarding the different job opportunities for the registered nurse. In addition, students were involved in hands-on demonstrations of various procedures.
ABAC nursing faculty members who assisted with the visit were Kitty Ray, Joy Conger,
Rebecca Arnold, Pattie Clark, and Golden. ABAC nursing students who participated were
Anthony Ditzler, Cary Braddy, Kevin Herring, Quiana Barrett, Jacquelin Harris, Tonya Bennett,
Christy Fowler, and Lisa Hatcher.

Abraham Baldwin Family
Sheila Hughes attended the national Parliamentary Debate Association's annual tournament and convention in Denver March 21-26. She assisted with running the tournament and attended business meetings. She was elected to the NPDA Community Board.
Garth Webb and Angie Palmer attended PSO meetings with students and parents at Berrien High School on April 1.
Carlos Howard visited Towers, Westlake, McNair, Harris County and Troup County high schools last week.
