Matthew Holland, a Pre-Medicine major from Cochran, is ABAC's newest national champion! Holland won the national title at #6 singles at the NJCAA national men's tennis tournament in Plano, Texas on May 15.
Holland defeated Roberto Mateos from Laredo 6-1,6-1 to win the national championship. Coach Alan Kramer's Stallions finished third in the nation in the team standings.
Holland enjoys a dual role in extracurricular activities at ABAC, since he’s also a member of the ABAC Ambassadors leadership organization.
Holland also keeps a close eye on his grade point average as a member of the Honors Program at the college. He enjoys playing tennis for the Stallions and meeting people from all over the world.
“I have learned that being the best is not the most important thing out there,” Holland said. “It’s all about TRYING your best, making friends, and having fun along the way.”
He hopes to continue his studies in medical school.
His favorite quote is by Belgian tennis
player Justine Henin, “I’m not afraid of anyone, but sometimes I’m afraid of
myself. The mental part is very important.”
