LALEWICZ FINISHES SECOND IN THE NATION

TIFTON - ABAC sophomore tennis player Monika Lalewicz finished second in the #1 singles category in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) tennis tournament, which wound up today (Thursday) in Tucson, Ariz.  The sophomore business major from Mississaugh, Canada lost to Jillian O’Neill from Hillsborough (Fla.) Community College in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the title match.  Lalewicz won the national title at #1 singles in 2008.

Lalewicz was trying to become only the second women’s tennis player in ABAC history to win the national title at #1 singles two years in a row.  The late Milena Stanoytcheva won back-to-back titles for ABAC in 1999 and 2000.  Stanoytcheva was a posthumous selection to the first ever ABAC Athletics Hall of Fame class in 2008.

Coach Alan Kramer expects the ABAC team to finish in a tie for sixth place in the tournament.  Earlier in the week, Lalewicz was named the NJCAA Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.  ABAC Assistant Coach Dale White was named NJCAA Assistant Coach of the Year for women’s tennis.

Kramer leaves on Friday for the men’s national tournament in Dallas, Tex.  The Stallions are the reigning NJCAA Region XVII champions.  ABAC won the men’s national championship in 1984 and 1999 under the direction of Coach Norman “Red” Hill.
