ABAC
Presidential Scholar Plans Career in Accounting
TIFTON—Kayla Davenport, a business major from
Hazlehurst, was a little nervous about her first semester at Abraham Baldwin
Agricultural College, but once classes were underway she began enjoying her
college life.
“I
didn’t know what to expect and didn’t know anyone at first,” Davenport said. “But I like the small-town feel of Tifton and
the campus. It’s like my hometown.”
The
Jeff Davis High School salutatorian was rewarded for her stellar academic
background by being named a recipient of the prestigious Presidential
Scholarship at ABAC. Dr. David Bridges,
president of ABAC, initiated the Presidential Scholarship program as a model
system designed to enhance recruiting and the admission of highly deserving students
to ABAC.
During
the fall semester, Davenport carried a heavy 18-hour course-load but still made
time to join a few clubs and organizations. She is a member of the Careers in
Focus learning community and on the College Activities Board (CAB).
“I
hope to join in more campus activities next semester,” Davenport said.
Davenport
is also civic-minded. Aside from her academic goal of becoming a certified
public accountant and someday having her own firm, she wants to open a facility
for the homeless that will help find them houses and employment.
“I
have wanted to do that since third grade,” Davenport said. “At first I just
started with wanting to help one family, but then I thought why not help a
bunch of families.”
She
plans to graduate from ABAC and further her education at Valdosta State
University to receive her bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Five years from now she hopes to be married,
working on her master’s degree in accounting, and possibly working in an
accounting firm.
She
is the daughter of Chris and Michelle Davenport and has two siblings, Chandler
(9) and Anslee (5).
The
spring semester begins at ABAC on Jan. 11, 2010.
