ABAC STUDENTS VOLUNTEER AT AGRIRAMA DURING WELCOME WEEK

tifton – As part of the recent 2009 Welcome Week activities at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, students volunteered to work at the Agrirama repairing the trademark steam locomotive.

“To ABAC’s credit, an integral part of their orientation session was a strong encouragement for students to get involved in the community through community service,” said Keith Rucker, an ABAC alumnus and a member of the Save Our Steam-train (SOS) committee.

The students teamed up with the SOS Committee to help rejuvenate the steam engine. Though the SOS was expecting about 15 students to show up, a group of about 35 came to help support their new community.

“ABAC had contacted the Agrirama a few weeks ago to see if there were any projects that students could work on, and the steam train immediately came to mind,” said Rucker.

According to Rucker, in the three hours that the ABAC students contributed to the project, 100 hours of work were accomplished.

“It was really a lot of fun to see so many young people working side by side on the locomotive, especially since they thought they were coming to plant flowers,” Rucker said.

ABAC Dean of Students Bernice Hughes said many clubs and organizations also do community service during the regular academic year.
