Resources of interest
to students of Introduced/Invasive Species

This pathfinder is arranged by format -- how (and where) to find books, journal articles and high quality web resources. EXCEPT -- for an excellent introduction to the topic of Introduced/Invasive Species and Invasion Ecology, read the article "Invasive Species" in the CQ Researcher AND the article entitled "Invasion Ecology" in the AccessScience database.

Books

To find books in the ABAC library use GIL, our online catalog. If you cannot find any books on your particular organism, do not despair. There may very well be a great deal of information contained within books that have as their major subject area introduced species. Try searching these SUBJECTS

Biological invasions
Nonindigenous pests
Invasion ecology

Expand your horizons! Look for other useful books in other University System of Georgia libraries by using the Universal Catalog. You can order these books (they will arrive in approximately three business days) using a service called GILExpress. In order to use GILExpress, you must have an activated library (Gold) card. The library staff would be pleased to activate your card during office hours and help you with any questions you might have about this service.

Databases

GIL is for books -- GALILEO is for journal articles. GALILEO gives you access to more than 100 different databases -- often, the hardest part of using GALILEO is deciding what database is most likely to have relevant material.

Databases are usually of two flavors; a varying mixture of full-text articles and citations or citations and abstracts only. You will often find that the databases offering full-text materials have many general interest and non-technical sorts of publications. Locating most of the cutting edge kind of research will require you to use the highly specialized indexes to find citations and then using the citations to track down the articles. We suggest you start with the large, more general databases and save the specialized citations-only databases to search if you are unable to find what you need full text.

Full text

Notice that you can restrict your searches here in many ways – full text only, peer-reviewed only. Also remember that sometimes your professor and the database will disagree as to what a scientific journal might be. HINT: Your professor is right.

Academic Search Complete

ProQuest Biology Journals

JSTOR Biological Collection -- these are NOT the most current issues of journals, but this database has the most depth of coverage. It gathers the core journals in a discipline and has the complete run, reaching back into the 1700s for some titles

Citation/abstract only

These databases will not give you the full text of any articles; however, this is where you will find the citations to articles detailing current conservation efforts. These databases also indexes large numbers of good quality web sites. Some of these are suitable for this assignment; some of them would be suitable for a middle school student – be careful!

You can't go wrong with Infomine !

We also recommend the Global Invasive Species Database and the US Governments' invasive species information site.
