The COMPASS test is the placement test for the University System
of Georgia. It is designed to test a student's knowledge in three key areas of
academics: math, reading and English. Its adaptive process allows the computer
program to test key concepts at several levels to indicate a student's
preparedness for college-level material. Based upon the results, a student is
placed in either college-level courses or Learning Support courses designed to
provide the necessary skills and information for future success.
Students can do additional practice for the COMPASS by utilizing the
Confidence Building Software available in the Student Success Center
prior to taking the exam. Please call ahead and come early.
Incoming freshmen are required to take the exam, unless they can exempt due to entering ACT or SAT scores and completion of the College Prepatory Curriculum. The exemption scores,
effective for students entering Spring 2009 are as follows:
SAT Verbal (Critical Reading) score ≥ 480
SAT Math score ≥ 480
ACT English ≥ 20
ACT Math ≥ 20
Transfer students can exempt the COMPASS test by:
Having previously taken the COMPASS and obtained passing scores for ABAC or
Having passed a college-level English course with a "C" or better to exempt the Reading and Writing portions of the COMPASS and
Having passed a college-level math course with a "C" or better to exempt the Math portion of the COMPASS.
May I use a Calculator? If so, which ones?
Yes: Calculators will be provided for all students. Students may us
only those calculators provided the test administrator. You will be allowed to
use the Testing Center's calculators and/or the calculators available on
COMPASS, and scratch paper will be provided. You may not bring your own
calculator.
If the COMPASS has been taken previously, then the scores need to either be indicated on the college transcripts from the transferring institution or be faxed to the Office of Student Success.
Scores over 3 years old will not be accepted and the
student should schedule a COMPASS test. Should the scores indicate, according to our requirements, that a student requires Learning Support courses, the student may retake the exam with ABAC and use those scores instead.
Students should verify that the testing institution provides both a Pre-Algebra and Algebra score if math testing is required. To Fax scores: Attn: Charla McGuinness Office of Student Success Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College FAX Number: 229-391-4996
